In 1957, Norfolk Public Schools began an experiment in teaching by television. Four years later, Vincent J. Thomas and Hunter B. Andrews, School Board Chairs of Norfolk and Hampton, established WHRO-TV by a handshake agreement – and the FCC awarded a license to operate channel 15, Virginia’s first non-commercial, educational television station.
No one could have imagined just how far that handshake would reach, but every school system, student, educator and citizen of Hampton Roads have benefited from it. Today, WHRO is a vibrant public service media company that promotes education, culture and citizenship through a variety of telecommunications services. Every day, thousands of viewers and listeners tune in to 89.5 WHRV FM, 90.3 WHRO FM, WHRO TV15, WHRO DT 15.1, WHRO KIDS, WHRO CREATE, and the WHRO Radio Reading Service. Owned by 17 local school divisions, WHRO delivers educational and new media services to 286,000 students and 25,000 educators per month as well. WHRO continues to employ creativity and technology to engage, enlighten and entertain the citizens of Hampton Roads.
