Top! En Español

Grades: 5-8
Length: 5/20 Minute
Rights: Annual Lease

In a lively and entertaining game show format, Top! En Español simplifies learning a foreign language—and motivates student viewers to practice the Spanish by joining in. Programs have been carefully devised to introduce and test basic language skills—with the linguistic content constantly reinforced by visuals and repetition.

The fast-paced game show models various levels of fluency by combining teams of proficient student speakers with beginners. The engaging host, who is fluent in Spanish, helps the contestants through a variety of games, such as quizzes, memory games, and cooking challenges, most of which are played against the clock.

Programs combine the three language skills of listening, speaking and reading, and comply with requirements and guidelines for language teaching. Basic subtitles in Spanish appear during the games to aid comprehension. Students gain the opportunity to hear the target language spoken by several different people, rather than just the teacher and fellow students.

Subject areas covered are numbers, weather, months, food, family members, clothes, and topics of personal interest to the contestants. Each activity is short, and segmented so that classroom use can focus on one subject area for reinforcement, if desired.
