Introducing Linear Systems.

Introductions to Linear Relations.  This episode introduces the concept of linear relations, stressing that equations, graphs and tables, are merely three different representations for the same information.  Students practice identifying linear red lations as equations, tables, and graphs. Further connections amongst equations, tables angraphs are explored by looking closely at ordered pairs.

Linear Equations:  Ax+By=C.  This episode leverages the familiar context of a movie theatre to introduce linear equations in standard form and to discuss how to graph linear equations by using the x- and y- intercepts. Students look at the structure of the standard form of a linear equation and identify A, B, and C in an example.

Linear Equations:  y=mx+b.  This episode introducesstudents to the slope-intercept (y = mx + b) form of a linear equation. After looking at the form of a slope-intercept equation and discussing the meaning of the variables y, m, x and b, we take a closer look at the equation y = 1/2 x + 2 and graph it & make a table. After identifying 4 steps to quickly graph equations in slope-intercept form, students do some practice with the demonstrated technique using 3 equations, all need to be rewritten to fit the slope-intercept form.

Properties of Exponents.  This episode deals with the first three laws of exponents and nods at the 4th. Leveraging the great quantities used in astronomy, the episode asks three questions that require manipulation of exponents to answer.  The first half of the program deals with  the first law of exponents—the Product of Powers Property. The second half of the program deals with  the second and third laws of exponents—the Quotient of Powers Property and the Power of a Power Property. The program can be watched in two parts or all together.

Slope of a Line.

Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides of the Equal Sign.  This episode deals with solving equations with variables on both sides of the equal sign. It begins with a look at Olympic history in track and field and asks the question, “When will the women’s winning times equal the men’s winning times?” This leads to the problem of solving the equation, 136.8 - .280y = 111.8 - .136y— demonstrating how to solve this type of equation.
